Farewell to Mei Lai Wah

Mei Lai Wah is officially closed...

Thanks to my sis Jenny for letting me know. I'm baffled. If you walk past there now, you'll see bright yellow notices of closure by the Department of Health (DOH). I'll see if there's any more info. as to why, but Yikes. What a shame.

The charm, service and even some of the workers haven't changed since I first set foot in the time warped old school cafe/bakery (about 15+ years ago) for Siu Bao. That's what I loved about this place--and places like this that keep their food and service simple, traditional and consistent. No need to update. And it wasn't just me -- I've found that family and friends also share the same sentiment for Mei Lai Wah with similar memories.
The last time I was there was in October '07 before Joel and I boarded the plane to Phoenix to visit the Latogs. They were grateful to have a piece of home with them in Phoenix. Sigh...Farewell Mei Lah Wah.

I'm sick at heart that Mei Lai Wah has closed. I moved to NYC 12 years ago and am so thankful that I was able to experience the place. The perfect winter treat was to sit in MLW's toasty warmth with a good book and order a yellow-bean bun and cuppa tea. And in the summer...well, those rotating fans dried my sweat! I loved every torn, red, bench seat!
